What does career progression in arbitration look like after the first case? How can you gain more experience and build your own arbitration practice?

Maciej Durbas, PhD, a partner at KKG Legal and head of the Arbitration Practice, discussed these issues during the AFM Below 40 meeting, organized under the auspices of the Court of Arbitration at the Polish Chamber of Commerce in Warsaw.

During the panel discussion “The First Case… and What’s Next? FAQ for Beginning Arbitrators and Counsel” Maciej shared his experiences related to handling his first arbitration cases, career development in arbitration, and the challenges faced by young counsel and future arbitrators. Joanna Kisielińska-Garncarek and Grzegorz Goniewicz, PhD, also participated in the discussion, and the meeting was moderated by Karolina Janczyn-Karczmarczyk and Damian Wyrzykowski, PhD.

The conversation showed that professional growth in arbitration involves much more than just knowledge of procedures. It also involves the ability to gain experience, build relationships, learn from other practitioners, and draw conclusions from each new case. The discussion also covered the differences between arbitration and proceedings before ordinary courts, as well as the specific characteristics of domestic and international arbitration.

Thank you to the organizers for the invitation and to all the participants for their active participation and inspiring discussions. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to join the conversation on arbitration with people who are just beginning their journey in this field and are seeking practical advice from experienced counsel and arbitrators.
