Can AI break down barriers to carbon trading in developing countries?

The panel „AI and Energy Transition in Developing Countries: The Role of Carbon Trading in Technological Transformation” highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in overcoming these challenges. The discussion was moderated by Paweł Sikora, partner at KKG Legal, and the panelists included experts from various fields, from energy management and maritime infrastructure to sustainable development and grassroots climate action, such as Dr. Kishore Golla, Naoufal Layad, Anas Gahshan and Mohon Kumar Mondal.

The panel was held as part of AIFOD Public Forums, a series of discussions on key challenges facing developing countries, led by members and Senior Fellows of AI For Developing Countries Forum.

The conversation highlighted several key insights:

  • Current emissions trading systems tend to benefit large corporations while smaller entities in developing countries continue to face significant barriers to entry.

  • AI has the potential to lower these barriers by providing accessible tools that enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions. These include smart grids, process optimization, and energy consumption management solutions.

  • One of the most important takeaways was the need to develop solutions tailored to local contexts rather than blindly replicating global models. Experts emphasized the importance of regional carbon trading platforms and localized AI implementations.

Participating in international discussions like AIFOD helps us better understand global trends and challenges affecting Polish companies undergoing energy transitions. This knowledge directly supports our daily work advising clients on regulatory and business aspects of energy transition.

At KKG Legal, these projects are led by leaders from our Energy and Natural Resources Practice, Kamil Zawicki and Patrycja Wysocka, who support clients navigating the legal and business complexities of energy transformation.
